Tania Watt is a singer/songwriter based in Lansing, MI. She has been active in the local music scene since late 2008, however, she has been singing and writing songs for most of her life.
Her music can best be described as heartfelt, lyrics-driven, insightful, and soulful, characterized by enchanting vocals, simple strums, and intricate finger-picking on the guitar and sometimes ukulele. Authentic and vulnerable to the core, her songs are both deeply personal, and yet highly relatable, telling stories about life, love, and loss that are reminiscent of conversations with an old friend. Filled with silver linings and lessons learned, her songs are ultimately a life-long story of trials, perseverance, hope, healing, faith, and change.
Tania has recently performed at River Rhythm Music & Arts Festival, ScrapFest, the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Charlotte, MI Summer Concert Series, The Good Neighbor Concert Series, the 2024 Women in the Arts Festival (WITA), the Haslett Community Church Summer Concert Series, the Allen Farmers Market, the East Lansing Farmers Market, the Rest with Music series at Abrams Planetarium on the Michigan State University campus, the Pumpstock Festival of American Roots Music, on the Michigan State Capitol Steps for the Her Flag 2020 project, Windwalker Underground Gallery, Blue Owl Coffee, and Woldumar Nature Center. Tania has also appeared as a guest on Good Neighbors with Bob Hoffman on FOX 47, LCC Radio 89.7 FM WLNZ’s “Live and Local” with Sarah Spohn, and on the Mike Bass Podcast.
With a mellow and down-to-earth sound, she is a great fit for house shows, listening rooms, arts events, coffee shops, wineries, farmer’s markets, and family-friendly music festivals. As a person of faith, she has also appeared as a special guest artist at Sycamore Creek - Eastwood, Sycamore Creek Church - South Lansing, and other area churches, performing a mix of original songs and contemporary worship music.
Tania is a lifelong environmental advocate and enjoys supporting events and organizations with a strong environmental ethic. With an education and background in natural resource management, she has held careers in environmental outdoor education, biological restoration, and coordination of energy efficiency & renewable energy programs that have benefitted communities, nonprofit organizations, and many others throughout the state of Michigan.
Tania primarily plays as a solo artist, but is occasionally backed by husband Jonathan Watt (formerly of the genre-smashing band Creature of One) on fiddle, cello, guitar, harmonica, and upright bass.
In addition to her own music, Tania has also supported other artists and cultivated community around the local music scene in a variety of ways throughout her career. She was the founder of the Lansing-Area Songwriter's Group, which was active from 2015-2020. Tania also hosted the Music Open Mic at Blue Owl Coffee in REO Town Lansing from its inception in August 2017 through December 2019, and also served as the Booking Manager for live music at the REO Town and East Lansing locations. Tania has also hosted various other pop-up open mics in the Lansing area at venues such as Elderly Instruments and The Brew Café.
Tania is also the host and organizer of The Good Neighbor Concert Series, which launched in the Fall of 2024 to provide a high-quality, inclusive, and accessible listening-room experience for the Greater-Lansing area. The series works to raise awareness, funding, and other support for local nonprofit organizations, collaborates with local businesses whose values align with its mission, and elevates the voices of emerging, underrepresented, minority, and marginalized musical artists from around the state of Michigan and beyond, as well as those whose lives and work clearly exemplify and advocate for a more just, peaceful, kind, healthy, diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible community, state, and world. Season 1 of the series focused on highlighting Michigan’s fantastic roster of female singer/songwriters, drawing from a combination of local talent and artists from all around the state. Season 2 of the series will be announced soon, with the first concert scheduled for October 2025.
